San Fermin Posters from Pamplona

The partying in Pamplona for the festival of San Fermin gets underway on July 6^th, so that by the next day there will be plenty of folks drunk enough to participate in the encierro, the city’s famous Running of The Bulls. The all-night drinking, to be followed by a morning bull-run, will take place every day through July 14^th, as the bulls are let out from their pen and charge up to the bullring.

The week of festivities is in honor of the patron saint of Navarra, Saint Fermin, a 13^thCentury local who was martyred in France. It includes a grand procession where musical bands, city officials, and the 19^th-Century papier mache “Giants” accompany the figure of the saint through the streets.

The Municipal Archive of Pamplona houses a collection of official San Fermin posters dating back to the 1880s. Starting in 1924, the original artwork for the posters has been preserved as well. There are so many fantastic posters in the collection. Here is a small sampling, beginning with this year's model.

Knoll Printed Matter (Part I)

Easing into 2011 with some visual, gourmet comfort food.

Way in advance of spring, and the opening of the exhibition, Knoll Textiles, at the Bard Graduate Center on May 18, I trust these Herbert Matter-designed ads, posters, and catalogs for Knoll will whet your appetite for both (spring and the show).

Matter was a design consultant to Knoll from 1946-1966. The Swiss-born designer and photographer was a pioneer of photomontage, among other darkroom techniques and a master of merging type with image. His is the Knoll identity you know so well, that you recognize it without seeing a piece of furniture or reading a word of text.

I can’t say exactly when during the next few months I’ll be posting “Part II,” but I can safely predict that there will be one. The selection here represents only a fraction of Knolliana produced over the years. And that’s before we even get to the textiles ...

Earth Day & Other Troxler Posters

As far as images go, Earth Day turns out to be quite a yawn. I was hoping to uncover and post all the fabulous posters of the last four decades, but alas, mediocrity is mostly what I found.

I did find one winner—this 1992 poster by Swiss designer Niklaus Troxler. Simple to the point of abstraction, it needs no type to to remind us of the violence we inflict upon our environment. Now, I might not get away with this anywhere else, but since this is my blog, I’ve decided that instead of boring you with Earth Day posters (which you are welcome to see here and here), I’ll show more of Troxler’s work.

Discovering jazz as a teenager, Troxler organized his first concert in 1966 at age 19. While passionate about music, he pursued his other passion, graphic design, as a career. In 1975, he united the two by producing the first annual ‘Jazz in Willisau’ festival and creating all the related visual material. Over the course of the ensuing 35 years, Troxler has designed an astonishing number of posters in a wide range of styles for the festival and for the performances of the participating artists. You can see them all on his website. Michael Beirut was quoted in a NY Times article about Troxler, "I love the poster series because it so neatly recapitulates the design history of the last few decades. You see the influence of Push Pin eclecticism, California new wave, Swiss post-modernism and post- punk grunge, all passed through the unique prism of a guy working in a really small town in Switzerland."
